Women.com presents Mr. Food July 26, 1999 Mr. Food is here to share some of his "OOH IT'S SO GOOD!!®" recipes and to answer all of your cooking questions and needs. MrFood: How's everyone doing? It's Mr. Food here and I am so excited about today's chat. If any of you have any questions for me, or want to share an idea or two, go ahead. I'm ready to share lots of "OOH IT'S SO GOOD!®" Okay, guys! Let's go! We're here let's open up for questions! Cheesewiz: I am looking for some ideas for summer side dishes other than your standard ones. Any new ideas? MrFood: It all depends what you mean by standard. We have to realize that one person's poison is another man's medicine. Do you mean potatoes, grilling vegetables, baked beans? I've got a favorite that I use. I'm looking it up now in my side dish book -- yes, I have an entire book on quick and easy side dishes -- it's called "Mr. Food's Quick and Easy Side Dishes." And you would have all of the imaginable side dishes. I have one here that is a quickie, marinated cucumber, which is 1/4 cup hot water, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 8-oz. bottle of Italian dressing, 3 good-size cucumbers, cut into little, thin 1/8 inch slices, and 1 medium size onion, very thinly sliced. Toss all of that into a bowl, mix it well, cover it, chill it for 2-3 hours and done! Okay, let's do something else here. Here's a super spaghetti salad where you break 1 pound of spaghetti in half and cook according to the package directions, drain it and rinse it. Then place it in a large bowl with 1 8-oz bottle of Italian dressing and 3 Tbsps. Salad Supreme (which you can buy in the supermarket spice isle). Then add 1/2 cup each of chopped red onion, chopped green pepper, and chopped red pepper. Just mix it all together, put it in the fridge, and when you are ready, enjoy! A great side dish, super for the summer, 'cause it's cool and still rich. Chatsalot: Any ideas for quick and easy summer desserts? One can only eat so much Jello! MrFood: Chatsalot - Hey, that's easy. We're going to give you the name of another cookbook -- all of these questions are coming up that relate so well to what we do. The book is called "Mr. Food's Cool Cravings" and the recipes are all easy, chilled and frozen desserts, perfect for the summertime. Here's one that I call "Block Party Ice Cream Cake." Here's what you do -- you take a whole half gallon block of vanilla fudge swirl ice cream out of the package and you place it on a serving platter. Spread a thawed 8-oz container of whipped topping evenly around the sides of the block, then spread 1 12-oz jar of fudge sauce over the top of the block, then spread a 3-oz package of lady fingers that are split in half around the outside of the block of ice cream with the whipped topping on it. Put it back in the freezer until ready to serve. You slice it so everybody gets a piece of the ladyfinger, everybody gets some of the whipped cream and the fudge sauce and the vanilla chocolate fudge ice cream! There are so many different sections in that book for the summer, you are going to love it. There are things to do with trifles and parfaits, all in minutes. Things to do with fruit, all in minutes. Cakes in minutes, cheesecake in minutes, pies in minutes, all types of frozen desserts! All types of scoopable delights--we've got a chapter on things like sinful chocolate sherbert and banana slush. We've got a whole section on sauces and toppings. You can't miss -- this is the summer book, an easy book for anytime you want a dessert that's going to be a quick one for you, and a long-lasting pleasure for everybody you are making it for.
