Neutrogena presents Dr. Christine Correale August 09, 2000 AriesRisng: Do foods like chocolate really cause me to break out more, or just my vivid imagination? Dr. Correale: There's never been a proven connection between diet and acne, despite all the myths! Autumn: What face washes are good to get rid of oily skin? Dr. Correale: Autumn, first it's important that you don't over cleanse as this can actually increase oil production. Using products such as Neutrogena's Oil Free Acne Wash and following with the Clear Pore Oil Controlling Astringent will help control the oil. If you're using prescription acne medication you'll want to use an extra gentle cleanser. Molly: I have really big pores and they are always clogged is there anyway to completely clear them out without squeezing the stuff out of them? Dr. Correale: Molly, first of all this is a very common problem. Using products with retinol and alpha hydroxy acids consistently can help reduce pore size over about a two month period. Squeezing the pores will not help reduce their size and may aggravate acne. Kimsgirl: I have a very sensitive skin and I find that no matter what I use for deep cleansing my face goes red and blotchy for days; is there a product you can suggest I use? Dr. Correale: Good question. When you have sensitive skin you should focus on NOT over cleansing! And also, don't use products that are abrasive to the skin such as scrubs. And, look for cleansing products that also moisturize. I recommend Neutrogena's Extra Gentle Cleanser or the Fresh Foaming Cleanser Angels: What can I do to treat specific areas on my face that are prone to breakouts? And is there something I can use to hide them while they are healing? Dr. Correale: The key to preventing recurring breakouts is use of acne medication such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid EVEN when the skin is CLEAR! When breakouts do occur an acne medication such as benzoyl peroxide can be applied to clean skin before applying makeup or a concealer. Sandy: I have a very dry forehead and nose but then my cheeks are oily and I get a lot of blackheads there; how do I combat that without using a heap of different products? Dr. Correale: Sandy, use one cleanser with acne fighting medication such as salicylic acid. After cleansing apply a moisturizer to the dry areas while acne fighting medication such as Neutrogena Multi-Vitamin Acne Treatment can be applied daily to the acne prone areas. Amanda: I prefer a nice light foundation, but still seek a good coverage, what do you suggest?
