HealthShop presents Carl Hangee-Bauer, N.D. March 23, 2000 ASKhealthshop: guest-jet says: where did you get your training and how long did it take? Dr. Carl: I was trained at Bastyr University. I graduated in 1984, and did a one year residency, through 1985. All in all, it took four years of naturopathic medical school, and one year of residency. I really enjoyed my time at Bastyr. I found the faculty to be truly professional and caring, and I learned a great deal while there. The blending of modern scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom, in developing health care strategies, showed me that medicine isn't just a science, but an art as well. I made many deep friendships which last to this day and was inspired by many of my teachers, particularly Joe Pizzorno, Bastyr's president. Bright1: What is Acupuncture? Dr. Carl: Acupuncture is the insertion of thin needles into points on the body, to influence circulation and improve health. ASKhealthshop: guest-phil says: I am a two pack a day smoker. Would I be a good candidate to use acupuncture to help me stop smoking? Dr. Carl: Sure! I've worked with many people to help them quit smoking, and some have been two pack a day smokers. Acupuncture won't make you quit smoking, but if you're motivated to quit, it can be a real help. I find that it helps people go through the quitting process more easily, thereby increasing their chances of success. When people are treated with acupuncture to quit smoking, the treatments are individualized. We try to understand what triggers you have with smoking, and what therapies are best to support you in the quitting process. Monica: Have you ever heard of Reiki? If so is that used in your clinic? Dr. Carl: I've heard of it, and I know practitioners who do Reiki work, though I've personally never experienced it. I've heard good things about it. None of the practitioners in my clinic do Reiki. Koala: Can you recommend anything to help get rid of lice and nits? Dr. Carl: There are some natural therapies for this, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. I know that one important thing to do is to wash all bedding and clothes, and dry them in a dryer. It kills lice.
