CosmoGIRL! presents Fashion Editor Jacqueline Azria-Palombo August 7, 2000 Jacqueline: It's tighter than before. Baggy is still in style. Some kids still love to wear baggy, but it's less in than it used to be. Girls want to be girls for this season, so girly is in. With Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, even though those girls are overly sexy, still they show that the girly thing is really in. So I would say the pants are a little bit closer to the body, the boot cut is in, they're not super wide, and leather is definitely in. But it's not about being completely in really tight pants, because kids want them not too tight so they can still feel comfortable. But the style is definitely closer to the body than it used to be. You still see some baggy pants, but less than before. The silhouette is skinnier. Wondering: What will the new styles be this year for jackets and coats for cold weather? Jacqueline: Well, the pea coat is still in, kind of this preppy look, but not boring. Just a little bit more feminine, like a short pea coat with a little pleated skirt. It's really a cute look, and then if you wear that same pea coat with your corduroy jeans, you will still have that 70s kind of retro look. The ski jacket is also a big trend. It's not as puffy, it's a smaller silhouette, it's closer to the body, with a zipper and snaps at the neck. It's kind of this racing jacket, it's a ski silhouette. That's what's happening right now with the nylon thing. Down jackets are still here, very warm and they're cute in bright colors or pastels, as well as the sleeveless down jacket which is really cute with a big sweater underneath. And pretty, pretty coats are coming back also. More girly again, with nice shapes. A little bit retro looking, a little bit closer to the body, pretty. Pretty coats are in. Curious: What colors are in for this fall, and what colors are absolute no-nos? Jacqueline: Well, all the neutrals are in, definitely--all the beiges and grays and browns, and also a lot of burgundy. But I also saw a lot of ice blue, so baby blue is really big. Still a lot of reds. I don't think there is any no-no, but I would definitely not go out in bright green or something like that--it's not that flattering, and it's not as cool. But all the brights otherwise. Orange is really in. And the pastels are so pretty, the pinks, the pale blues, the colors and the neutrals. So there are not that many rules for colors for fall. Abercrombie2cheer: Hi Jackie! What kind of shirts are the most fashionable this winter and fall? Jacqueline: For a really trendy girl to go out, I would say definitely the shirt that ties around the neck. It has a halter shape, and there's this long piece of fabric that you can tie and that comes back around the neck. That's a big trend that's very 70s-80s looking, and that's to go out. Definitely, for your next New Year's Eve for the cool girl. And to go to school, well, if you are really trendy in your school and you dare wearing 70s shirts with funky geometrical prints, they are really nice. Usually in polyester and really 70s/ beginning of 80s look, and they're cool to wear with a pair of corduroys or a pair of jeans. And for the girl that's more conservative I would say the Oxford shirt is everywhere and is super cute, in every color, in stripes, in plaid. Oxford is very cute. You just roll up the sleeves, even put a little sweater vest on top of it, and it's this geeky, preppy, cool look that's very much going on.
