CosmoGIRL! presents William Cane, Kissing Expert January 12, 2001 Is it better when it’s wetter? Should you give him just a peck? Or a full-fledged French? Kissing expert and author of “The Art of Kissing,” William Cane, shares his tips on giving the perfect kiss. CosmoGIRL: Welcome to our chat with kissing expert William Cane. This chat is sponsored by CosmoGIRL! a magazine for REAL girls with REAL issues. Log on at www.cosmogirl.com William Cane: It's a pleasure to be here, and I'll open the floor to any questions or comments. Thank you. Ace High24: How long should the 'Perfect Kiss' be? William Cane: One minute and 7 seconds. I wish there was a perfect kiss. The longer a kiss goes on, the more intimate it becomes. Kisses can vary in length from very short to very, very long. Starry25: If my guy is shy, how can I get him to open up and kiss me more? William Cane: That's a good question. Some men and guys need the gal to be a little more outgoing and aggressive. Don't hesitate to make the first move, to move close, and to signal your willingness to be kissed by flirting and maintaining a lot of eye contact. If he's very, very shy, you can also watch romantic movies with him, and that may help also. Angel0116: I am still a bit nervous about kissing. What can make me feel more confident? William Cane: That's an excellent question! The more you read about kissing, the more confident you will be. Read the February CosmoGIRL! article on page 36 thoroughly, and then I would read anything else you can get your hands on, on the internet or even my book, "The Art of Kissing." It will give you more confidence than probably your boyfriend will ever have. Shari: How do you use your tongue without swallowing the guy? William Cane: Well, you know, you just do what feels good and natural to you. Kissing is kind of like eating. You want to have fun, but there is really no right or wrong way to do it. A British psychiatrist, Adam Phillips, said, "Kissing involves some of the pleasures of eating in the absence of nourishment." So just enjoy the tongue contact but keep an eye on your guy to make sure he's not turning blue. Cindy: What makes you The Kissing Expert? William Cane: People always call me that. I wrote "The Art of Kissing" in 1991, and after I wrote it, and after I kissed my girlfriend, she said, "You wrote "The Art of Kissing" and this is the best you can do?" I tried every single kiss in the book, all 30 of them, including the upside down kiss, the vacuum kiss, and even the violent one from the South Pacific, the Trobriand Islands kiss, and I learned a heck of a lot. R Rare: Is kissing truly an art? William Cane: Yes. Anybody can kiss but few can kiss really, really well. It always helps to learn and discover what other people are doing so that you can improve your own technique. Of course, you've got to have passion, and that's almost impossible to teach, but the technique part of kissing can be learned, and that truly is an art. And that's why I wrote the book. Pastell Blu: Well I have had a boyfriend for a couple of months now and both of us are scared to kiss each other. How should I make the move and just kiss him? I've never kissed anyone before and it's scary. I don't want to do something wrong! William Cane: First of all, the easiest first kiss to accomplish is a goodnight kiss. Try it at the end of a date. Second, there is no right or wrong way to kiss. Third, be sober for your first kiss, because you'll remember it a lot better the next day. To make your first kiss, move close to the guy, sit close to him, flirt, look into his eyes deeply, and go for it! Misty Grl8: My mom thinks that kissing at the age of 13 isn't proper. Is she right? Should she ground me? Or should I have the right to kiss my BF? William Cane: No, she's wrong. You should have the right to kiss your boyfriend; however, you may have to kiss him on the sly. Honestly, that will probably be even more fun, but a lot of parents are stricter than they need to be, especially since kissing is such an innocent, romantic experience.
